Happy Thanksgiving!

I would like to highlight a few reasons to be thankful for Thanksgiving!

Here is a letter from our Garden Coordinator: Kathleen McGah

Thank you very much to the 20 or so volunteers, big and small, who helped out in the Lowell Learning Garden this past Sunday!  We had a great turnout - and, it was particularly fun to have the Girl Scout Daisies, and their grownups, join us.

Volunteers worked together to help "put the garden to bed" for winter.  Among the tasks involved were: removing frost-killed vegetables; weeding edges and paths; placing discarded plant materials in various composting piles, or in piles for DPW pick up ; storing hoses and tools in the shed; and harvesting what was left of the beans for future learning activities.  (See photos from Sunday, below)

If you weren't around to help out in the garden on Sunday, don't worry - there are other ways to support Watertown school gardens!  In fact, there is currently another grant challenge being offered by the non-profit, SeedMoney.  SeedMoney is awarding $400 to the first 50 garden projects that raise $600 online.  If you are able to donate any amount at all, it would be so helpful in supporting these important learning resources in Watertown.  To learn more, click here.

I received this letter expressing gratitude for the Rafael and Karina Salaverria:

Dear Principal Phelan,

I am the Outreach Coordinator and co-founder of Mended Little Hearts of Boston, a support group that assists families of children with congenital heart defects (CHD). I am writing to express my gratitude and admiration of one of your students, Rafael Salaverria.  Rafael and his sister, Karina, donated the proceeds from several lemonade stands that they set up during their summer break. We used their generous donation to create care bags for families that are inpatient on the cardiac floor of Boston Children's Hospital.

This Thanksgiving, I am very honored and thankful to have met the Salaverria children. Their kindness and integrity display a wonderful act of community spirit, and we wanted to wish them every success in their studies and for the future.
