Written by Kelly McCollum, our librarian
Greetings,
Welcome back to school! On the first day of school we had a smooth opening. Students settled into routine right away as if vacation never took place. The kindergarten came in the following day eager to go to class and meet their new friends.
Thursday was definitely a tough day, the heat got to everyone. We made adjustments during the day to cope with the high temperatures. We made sure everyone had fans.  Many classrooms moved into air conditioned spaces and some classrooms needed to double up to accommodate the need for AC. Students went to recess before 11:00 am. PE took place indoors when the temperature was too high to go outside. I welcome fall with open arms.
Prek and K started the year off eating in their classrooms. It’s still too early to draw conclusions if this way is better but early signs indicate it has had a positive impact on our students. First grade students have the cafeteria to themselves now that kindergarten doesn’t come to the lunchroom. This too appears to have made a significant difference in the tone and organization of the space. Ms. Whitmore has been reviewing cafeteria etiquette with the students before, during and leaving lunch. We want to provide students with the time and space to refuel and take a much need break.
We had our first fire drill on Friday. It took place during first lunch. This was the first fire drill taking place during lunch and recess. Grade 1 was at the end of their lunch when the alarm was pulled by the fire department. Grade 5 was at recess on the Lowell Ave side of the building. We were able to evacuate the building in under 2 minutes. The whole drill took 7 minutes from start to finish. It was a huge success.
This week we have many events going on, Tuesday night we kick off the PTO with our first meeting. We meet at 6:30 in the library. Donna Tuccinardi, president, and Lauren Unsworth, vice president, welcome all to attend. Kindergarten parents this is a great way to meet new friends. Please join us.
Thursday night we hold our first School Site Council Meeting. All are welcome to come and listen to the discussion. We will start the year off discussing membership. Three teachers have decided to step down from the council this year. These members have been on the site council for many years and feel it’s time to let others join the committee. The balance of members depends on the number of teachers to parents. Last year we had 4 teachers and 5 parents. I’ve recently invited new teachers to join the council. I haven’t heard from any teachers as of today but hopefully we can solicit new members. Teachers have expressed the time as a factor in joining the council. We will discuss the best time to hold these meeting at on Thursday. The Cunniff and the Hosmer hold their meetings earlier in the day. If we happen to only have one teacher we will need to adjust the number of parents down to 2. The meetings traditionally take place on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 in the library. I will keep you posted on how we will proceed this year.
The morning arrival routines have been going very well. There are a few areas we ask for your continued cooperation. Student safety is our top priority. Arrival and dismissal time is very busy. We understand many parents are bustling around trying to get children to multiple schools and themselves to work. Please remember to park only in designated parking areas, not on or blocking crosswalks. Cars should not be left unattended in areas where live drop off is taking place.  Attention to these procedures ensures the safety for all our students.

Wednesday, September 26th will be our first Early Release Day. Students will have a modified schedule. Grades 3, 4, and 5 will have specials but K, 1, 2 will not. Grades take turns having specials on Early Release Days. The lunch schedule changes too. Students will go to lunch 40 minutes earlier on half days. Dismissal time is 12:15 in the regular pick up location.
I Look forward to seeing you all at Back to School Night.
Warmest regards,
Stacy
